Over my 20 years as an artist, I have often painted our woods, but that has never been an easy subject. In the early years, I painted the woods because they were always there, and the different seasons beckoned to me. I did get better at capturing the feeling of our woods the more I painted them. But in the beginning, I didn't realize what a difficult subject this can be. All of the seasons of our woods are beautiful, but as we all know, a snowfall makes its own magic. When the trees are finally bare of leaves, we watch the winter sun setting every evening over our ridge, and this last blaze of light through the trees is what I have tried to capture here.
This painting is now hanging in the Maryland Statehouse in Annapolis in the offices of new state delegate for District 42B, Michele Guyton. It may be viewed and is for sale there.
